The concept of “mentor” has many layers of meanings that contain highest form of respect, emotion and sentiment associated with its usages in all cultures. In Greek mythology, Mentor was the son of Alcumus and friend and advisor of Odysseus. When Odysseus had to go for Trojan War, he put Mentor, as a trusted friend, in charge of his young son Telemachus and the palace (Odyssey II, 255; 267). As a trusted friend and wise old man, Odysseus was able to leave his kingdom in the hand of Mentor, and possibly from this story comes the modern meaning of “mentor” in English as a trusted and wise guide, a teacher who inspires his protégé with personal example of wisdom and right judgment. |
